Learner Portfolio

The learner portfolio is a wonderful opportunity for you to chart your growth and your learning over the two year English A: Language and Literature course.  It is meant to act as a tool to aid in your learning, but it's not only that.  It's also a space for reflective and analytical thinking, creative and formal writing, spontaneous and studious readings of texts and works.

It's also expected that you use the learner portfolio to connect to the assessment components of the course, especially the individual oral and the higher level essay, but it's more than a tool for assessment purposes.  It's a place for you to find yourselves as readers, writers, and thinkers.  It's a place for you to grow and develop over time as students of English.  And hopefully, if done right, you should find it enjoyable and dare we say it, a little bit of fun too.

The learner portfolio will look different for each student - there's no one right way, but your teacher will provide you with their expectations and guidance in what it should look like. It's also important to think about the following questions, and developing your own answers, so that this course requirement is personalized to you.

Questions to consider:

  1. What is the purpose of the learner portfolio?  Why keep one?
  2. What types of writing, thinking, annotating, and more will you keep in it?
  3. How you will use the learner portfolio to develop your thinking, writing and speaking involved in the various assessment components?
  4. Where information will be kept (analog or digital)? How will you make sure you don't lose it?
  5. How you will use it in class and how often will you contribute to it?
  6. Is there anything else you think you should think about in terms of creating a personalized learner portfolio?
