2019 Paper 1 (SL) - Spending Time, Not Money
This is the final Paper 1 InThinking will provide for the "old" exam. All together, there are 52 samples on the site for the course ending in May (or November) of 2020. In other words, students have a lot of support here!
In this particular exemplar, the student has done an excellent job in many respects to discussing the author's choices in relation to audience, purpose and context. But, the candidate missed out and did not sufficiently deal with the author's time in Nigeria and how that impacted her. While candidates do not get marked down for what they don't do, there isn't enough understanding of the source text to say this is an excellent response. However, it's very, very close and because of that, this is a great example to use with students.
The exam text, sourced from the internet, is here. Please note that the actual exam is slightly abridged from this online version, but because of copyright, we cannot reproduce the exam paper for you. It comes from Psychologies magazine and is titled "How to Stop Spending Money and Instead Spend Time."
Sample Student Response
Teacher's Comments
Criterion A - Understanding of the text - 5 marks
The analysis of the text should show an understanding of the text's purpose, its context (where this can be deduced) and a target audience. One's analysis of the text needs to be supported by relevant examples from the text.
4 out of 5: There is a good understanding of purpose, audience and context shown. But, the candidate doesn't sufficiently deal with the author's time in Nigeria and how she spends it in enough depth to award higher. It is close, but there isn't very good understanding of the exam text yet.
Criterion B - Understanding of the use and effects of stylistic features- 5 marks
The analysis of the text must show an awareness of how stylistic features, such as tone, style and structure, are used to construct meaning. A good analysis comments on effects of these features on its target audience.
4 out of 5: Similar to criterion A, the candidate shows excellent understanding of the imagery and word choice as it relates to the materialistic culture the author is used to. However, there isn't a complete understanding of all the stylistic features - especially as it relates to her time away from the materialistic culture - to award very good or excellent here.
Criterion C - Organization and development - 5 marks
The analysis must contain coherent arguments that are well-developed. The analysis must be organized effectively.
4 out of 5: While it's important to not penalize a student repeatedly for the same mistake, not fully grasping the entirety of the text means it's very difficult to score top marks in all criteria. As such, the development of the argument is good and well-organized, but it isn't fully developed.
Criterion D - Language - 5 marks
The language of the analysis must be clear, varied and accurate. The register of the analysis must be appropriate, meaning it contains formal sentence structure, good choice of words and effective terminology.
5 out of 5: There is a very appropriate register and style throughout with language that is accurate, clear, and analytical.
