Paper 1: Practice Texts to Go
The Paper 1 examination is an unseen written examination. Unlike the Individual Oral and the Higher Level Essay there is no need for students to connect their response to wider reading or a wider body of work. Instead, students are asked to write a focused response to one non-literary text (at Standard Level) or two non-literary texts (at Higher Level) The course study guide provides a list of texts that could appear in an examination. It is, however, difficult for teachers and students to anticipate what exactly will appear in an examination paper. Whilst it is redundant for students to prepare for every possible text type, they do need to have practiced writing Paper 1 responses on a wide range of text types in advance of the examination, and to be able to transfer their understandings and skills to texts that they may not be exactly familiar with. Teachers may wish to build the skills and competencies for the Paper 1 examination through the study of bodies of work and by selecting (independent) texts that build into the wider themes, areas of exploration, concepts, and global issues that their course highlights. In addition, teachers may wish to select texts that have a wide range of purposes and functions; often, even in different text types, the function of a text (e.g to persuade, to inform, to explain etc.) is expressed using similar linguistic and stylistic features. To save teachers time, we have created a number of systematically organized pages that provide interesting and stimulating texts to quickly download and bring to classrooms.
