2016 P2 HL (The Bluest Eye and Ghosts - Exemplar 1)

Paper 2 sets high expectations for students.  They must not only answer a specific question and demonstrate their knowledge of the texts through their answer, but they must also connect their response to the context of the texts, however broadly defined, while still making sure to show an appreciation of the writer's choices.  Doing so while using a sophisticated, but not pretentious register, helps as well.

In the May 2016 exam, question number six asked students “how is ‘home’ depicted in at least two of the works you have studied and what is its significance.”

Defining "home" wil be important.  "How" implies the writer's choices.  Finally, they will have to connect their response to the significance of it all.  This series of posts will demonstrate how different students answered this question using the same two works: The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison and Ghosts by Henrik Ibsen.

There is a good chance your students will not have studied either of these texts.  And that’s okay.  Instead of focusing on the content, you can focus on the writing when using these exemplars in your classroom.  What did student A do that was different from student B?  How did that help or hurt them?  A look at introductions makes sense here since it lays out the argumentative thread.  You can also use the InThinking "Paper 2: Writing Effective Introductory Paragraphs" to support you and your students as you work through this series of posts.

Assessment Criteria

Examiner's Comments

Criterion A - Knowledge and understanding - 5 marks

The essay demonstrates an understanding of the works and knowledge of the contexts in which they were written. The student shows how context affects interpretations of the texts.

5 out of 5: The essay reflects an excellent understanding of the text and contexts.  The candidate seamlessly integrates context as evidence throughout.

Criterion B - Response to the question - 5 marks

A Paper 2 essay should focus on the question chosen. The implications of the exam question need to be explored in depth, and the student's response must be relevant to it.

5 out of 5:  The candidate focuses on "home" often and uses it as a way to discuss social criticism (the "significance" part of the question).

Criterion C - Understanding of the use and effects of stylistic features - 5 marks

In the Paper 2 exam, a connection needs to be made between the author's use of stylistic features and the effect of them on his or her audience. As Paper 2 questions invite students to explore how meaning is shaped by context, answers will have to explain why authors choose for a certain genre, narrative technique or structure.

5 out of 5:  The candidate includes numerous references to various stylistic devices and their effects to prove her/his sophisticated argument about the idea of “home” in both texts.

Criterion D - Organization and development - 5 marks

The essay must develop an answer to the question coherently and effectively. Topic sentences should guide the ideas of paragraphs. Illustrations should be integrated well and explanations should shed light on the subject matter.

5 out of 5:  This is a developed and well structured argument.

Criterion E - Language - 5 marks

The language of the Paper 2 exam should be effective and accurate. The choice of vocabulary and use of grammar should be consistent and appropriate.

4 out of 5:  Good language, but a few too many errors and long sentences.
