Teaching Visual and Multimodal Texts
This section of the site is designed to help teachers and students work with visual and multimodal texts (or ‘multimodal ensembles’, as some writers prefer). As this section of site develops, it will, for example, address questions such as:
- How do such texts communicate information?
- How do they render narrative?
- How are they exploited to represent and express meaning?
- What metalanguage helps students talk about such texts meaningfully and with authority?
It should be obvious that if our students are to understand how images establish meaning, they need knowledge of the visual meaning-making systems used in their production. For assessment purposes, visual and multimodal literacy is essential for Paper 1 and has the potential to be included in all other assessment components.
