Starter/Plenary activity - What's in a (brand) name?
What's in a (brand) name?
This is a simple but effective/engaging activity that sparks discussions about aspects of branding (AO2) and the importance of branding (AO3).
Create your name using letters from famous brands and explain the meaning behind the logos. Share your creations with the rest of the class.
So, for my name...
P = Packard, the first letter of David Packard’s surname, co-founder of Hewlett-Packard (1939); the "p" is also an inverse reflection of the letter "h" (for Hewlett).
A = Amazon (provides everything from A – Z with a smile); notice the "arrow" in the Amazon logo is also a smile.
U = Unilever (the image represents the natural world we inhabit); notice the birds and plants in the logo which signifies the company's commitment to reducing the environmental impacts of our daily lives.
L = Lexus (the luxury vehicle division of the Toyota); Japan's top automaker needed a separate strategic business unit to compete in the luxury car industries, with the likes of Audi, BMW, and Mercedes Benz.
Please give it a go!
This activity works well as a way to embed creativity (as a key concept), branding (Unit 4.5), and updating your classroom displays!
It also works well as an ATL Activity that embraces Research, Thinking, and Communication skills.
