Update on the implementation of the new programme
Friday 9 October 2020
With all the uncertainty and extra pressure on schools, teachers and students caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, which seems likely to continue for some considerable time yet, the IB has announced a delay in implementing the new programme. The teaching of the new IB Diploma chemistry programme was due to start in August/September 2022 with the first examinations in May 2024. This has now changed so that the teaching will start in August/September 2023 and the first exams will be in May 2025.
The last examinations on the current programme will be November 2024. An earlier release from the IB confirmed that in May 2021 there will be no Paper 3 examination so the options will not be assessed. As things stand currently the options will continue to be assessed in 2022, 2023 and 2024. As stated in the latest programme review report, there will be no options in the new programme with the external assessment consisting of two, not three, examination papers.

Hi Geoffrey, do you know if the new course will still begin teaching August/September 2023, with first exam in May 25?
Thankyou
Chris
Hello Chris,
See a more recent blog I posted after the IB released their last official update earlier this year in JIB Docs (2) Teamary.
Workshop leaders are currently (September 2022) being trained (upskilled) on the new programme. The 2023 Guide will be published on My IB early next year (probably February). After that there will be official IB workshops on the new programme and this site will effectively become two sites in one - one for the existing programme (last exams November 2024) and one for the new programme (first exams May 2025). Teaching the new programme starts August/September 2023.
Hi Mr Neuss- has the new syllabus's subject guide been published anywhere yet? Or are we still waiting until after new year?
Hi Renee, Although the IB has issued several releases about the new subject guide (e.g. see my blog) the new 2023 guide is not due for publication until early next year (probably February). Once it is in the public domain (i.e. on My IB) this site will essentially become two sites in one. It will give you the initial choice of choosing the programme (based on the 2014 Guide) for last exams in November 2024 or the programme based on the 2023 Guide for first exams in May 2025 as it will have been completely updated to cover both syllabuses.
