The air molecules gain kinetic energy and spread out, so the air becomes less dense and rises. This lifts the balloon so it gains gravitational potential energy.</p> <p><span class="snippet-fa fa fa-arrow-down fa-lg"> </span>&nbsp;When the balloon is higher, the surroundings are lower in temperature.
