WEBVTT
00:00.000 --> 00:03.040
In this video, we will discuss how to write your introduction.
00:03.680 --> 00:09.280
We will talk about dos and don'ts, and we will see how to fully focus your research question.
00:10.320 --> 00:16.720
Your introduction is marked under the exploration criterion. Students often think that personal
00:16.720 --> 00:22.080
engagement should mainly be shown in the introduction. To clarify this, we will briefly
00:22.080 --> 00:28.800
address the personal engagement criterion in this video. Dos include reformulating your
00:28.800 --> 00:35.040
research question to create your title, connecting your IA to a specific personal experience,
00:35.600 --> 00:41.680
and keeping the focus on your specific topic. Let's see how these look like in our example IA.
00:42.720 --> 00:48.240
As you can see, I simply reformulated my research question to create the title.
00:48.880 --> 00:54.240
In my introduction, I mentioned a specific personal experience and briefly explained
00:54.240 --> 01:00.160
what a glass xylophone is. Note that I do not go into too much detail, as this would be relevant.
01:00.800 --> 01:06.800
Then I connect my experience to physics and specify what I will do in my investigation.
01:07.360 --> 01:12.880
Note that here I don't discuss general physics concepts such as how sound waves work. This
01:12.880 --> 01:19.360
would be too general and not specific enough to my topic. Don'ts include writing about irrelevant
01:19.360 --> 01:25.840
personal or historical details, explaining general physics concepts, trying to show personal
01:25.840 --> 01:32.480
engagement by using big words and writing a personal engagement section. We already discussed
01:32.480 --> 01:39.280
the first two points, so let's talk a bit about personal engagement. Personal engagement is evaluated
01:39.280 --> 01:44.480
holistically, in other words based on your entire IA and not just on your introduction.
01:45.040 --> 01:49.920
The best way to show personal engagement is to choose the topic that you're excited about
01:49.920 --> 01:55.760
and to do good quality work, paying attention to detail. I usually just ask students to do these
01:55.760 --> 02:01.760
two things and ask them to forget about trying to show personal engagement. If you are still worried
02:01.760 --> 02:08.320
about personal engagement, just keep in mind that it's only two out of 24 marks. You will almost
02:08.320 --> 02:13.920
surely get at least one out of the two marks, and the second mark that you might be worried about
02:13.920 --> 02:22.960
is only worth 0.83% so less than 1% of your overall physics grade. So to conclude, please do not use
02:22.960 --> 02:30.400
big words, for instance loving electrical circuits or being excited about circular motion, and definitely
02:30.400 --> 02:36.400
do not write a personal engagement section. This will almost always lower your IA mark.
02:37.200 --> 02:43.920
To fully focus your research question, add in specific detail, and if relevant include equipment
02:43.920 --> 02:51.040
information. My initial research question after brainstorming is this, and my final fully focused
02:51.040 --> 02:57.360
research question is this. As you can see, I added in a bit more detail and included some
02:57.360 --> 03:03.680
equipment information. Finally, I placed my research question at the end of the first paragraph.
03:04.320 --> 03:08.880
This completes step two action one. Now you know how to write your introduction.
03:09.600 --> 03:14.960
In the next video, we will discuss how to write your background information.
