The period 1550-1650 saw the use of more muskets than pikes, smaller and more manoeuvrable artillery and larger, well-trained armies. Pioneered by the Dutch in their revolt against Spain, these methods were further developed by Gustavus Adolphus. The need for more skilled soldiers, it is argued, led to the development of standing armies. This marked the beginning of modern warfare.

Other historians have accepted that many of these changes took place, although they have questioned how important the Thirty Years’ War was as a turning point. Geoffrey Parker dates the changes back to the end of the Hundred Years War, in other words back to 1450. Parker does agree however that ‘the scale of warfare in early modern Europe was revolutionised, and this had important and wide-ranging consequences’.

What weaponry and tactics were used?

There were four main types of soldier/weapon used in the battles of the Thirty Years’ War:

Cannon – both large and small, with the increasing use of smaller, more maneuverable cannon on the battlefield.

Muskets: Developed in the sixteenth century, the musket took a time to load and had a range of up to 300m, firing a lead ball of 40g. The firing mechanism was unreliable, especially in wet weather, and the musketeers fired in turn, by line to give each other covering fire.

Pikemen: Had been in use since the late 15th Century. They carried a long pole of around 5 metres, tipped with a steel spike. This weapon could be used defensively, in a braced position, or offensively when it would be held parallel to the ground as the group advanced. Pikemen wore a steel helmet but relatively little body armour as it would have been too tiring to move on the battlefield.

Cavalry: Soldiers on horseback could be used in to different ways. The ‘heavy’ cavalry would charge against the lines of infantryman in an attempt to ‘shock’ the opposition. This could be less effective if against well-disciplined pikemen. Otherwise ‘light’ cavalry would be armed with pistols and keep up a barrage of fire using similar methods to the musketeers on the ground.

There were some changes in technology during this period, for example the use of field glasses and the adaptation of weapons. Yet the main developments in the use of gunpowder and metals to create hand held weapons on the battlefield had come by the early years of the 16th Century. The era of the Thirty Years’ War saw developments in the tactics, in other words how these weapons were used on the field of battle.

The main tactic used was the linear formation, with ranks of musketeers interspersed with pikemen and protected on the flanks by the cavalry. A heavy artillery bombardment would be used at the beginning of the battle and then lighter infantry drawn up closer to the enemy as the battle progressed. Well trained troops could maintain a more consistent firepower which protected the army from a cavalry charge. The objective was to break through the enemy line, usually by identifying and attacking the weaker flank.

The Thirty Years’ War was a land war. It was fought largely in the German territories of the Holy Roman Empire between large armies, recruited from across Europe. A lot of the soldiers could be described as ‘mercenaries’ in that they were paid to fight. Armies were raised and led by individuals who expected a reward for helping the princes and rulers. They could be described as ‘military entrepreneurs.’ The most significant of these was Wallenstein. Gustavus Adolphus also raised his large army from across Europe, as the source at the top of this section showing Scottish soldiers in the service of Gustavus Adolphus, indicates.

For further discussion of mercenaries and an essay planning exercise on the use of mercenaries go to the essay planning page.

Task One

ATL: Thinking skills

What could you conclude from these statistics? future reward after victory

Having the army ‘living off the land’, taking resources from the territory they were in, which could include forced contributions and pillage.

Obtaining subsidies from other countries who had an interest in the war and its issues.

All of the above methods were used to some extent during the Thirty Years’ War. For example Sweden used ABJ. France CDE. Spain DEFG. The Holy Roman Emperor made use of H in the position of Wallenstein. All participants used I, which could be particularly severe on the local population in the hands of the mercenary soldiers. The trend in the war was from private armies in the period to 1630 and increasingly government backed forces afterwards, especially after 1635.

Your thinking about these methods of financing war should have led you to the conclusion that each would contribute to some sort of crisis, not least for the native populations of the German lands. You should also think about the effect of either victory or defeat on the battlefield for these methods of finance and for the governments. You should also appreciate the difficulties of creating peace after these years of crisis, especially when the army in the field could, to some extent, ‘pay for itself’.

Task Two

ATL: Thinking skills

From every thing that you have read above, and also using this article 'The Thirty Years' War, The First Modern War'? identify the ways in which The Thirty Years' War can be seen as a 'Total War'.

3. Why was the war so prolonged?

There are several reasons for this:

Despite the claim that there was a ‘military revolution’ the battles of the Thirty Years’ War were indecisive. Although individual battles such as White Mountain which ended the Bohemian Revolt or Nordlingen which cleared the Swedes out of northern Germany were often decisive - many battles and campaigns did not have a clear result and many victories were not followed up. At no point did one side establish a dominant position so that they could take charge of the peace, until the French forces were directly involved in the 1640s.

Very large armies were put into the field. They could not be financially supported by the states and rulers they represented as the cost was too large. The soldiers were ‘quartered’ on the land, in other words they took food and shelter from the population. This meant that the army had to be continually on the move, threatening new territory and raising new opposition. It also had drastic consequences for the native population of the German states.

It could also be argued that the war had complex causes. There was not a single, or a simple issue to be resolved. Look back at your work on the causes of the war. You will remember that it was about the Catholic and Protestant struggle, but it was also about the power of the Holy Roman Empire within the constitution of the Empire, and it was about the individual interests of the different powers which became involved. Each time the war looked like it might end, a new issue flared up.

Task One

ATL: Thinking skills

Why, according to this source, did the war last for so long?

Basically the inconclusive character of warfare owed much to problems with the supply of men, money and provisions, and to the strength of fortifications. Supply and finance were the real problems. The early modern state was just inadequate to the task. Whatever military innovations there were, supply of men and materials counted for more. There could be no total victories, no total defeats. It is no wonder warfare was indecisive, when the armies were constantly in search of supplies. Indeed the war became a struggle for resources as whole regions were devastated. Defending and keeping areas for supply often took precedence over the development of a military strategy....Peace only came about when a state of exhaustion had been reached on both sides.

Graham Darby ‘The Thirty Years’ War, 2014

Task Two

ATL: Thinking and self-management skills

Using all of the information above, the articles, and your own research into the battles, consolidate your notes on the practices of The Thirty Years' War under the following headings:

Role and significance of leaders

Mobilization of human and economic resources

Organization of warfare; land strategies

Significance of technological developments

Task Three

ATL: Thinking skills

From the information on this page, your own reading and presentations to what extent do you agree with historian Michael Roberts that The Thirty Years' War saw 'a military revolution'?

Write two paragraphs; one arguing that there was a military revolution and the second paragraph arguing that there was not in fact a 'revolution'.

4. Most especially was every one of the enemy bent on securing much booty. When a marauding party entered a house, if its master had anything to give he might thereby purchase respite and protection for himself and his family till the next man, who also wanted something, should come along. It was only when everything had been brought forth and there was nothing left to give that the real trouble commenced. Then, what with blows and threats of shooting, stabbing, and hanging, the poor people were so terrified that if they had had anything left they would have brought it forth if it had been buried in the earth or hidden away in a thousand castles. In this frenzied rage, the great and splendid city that had stood like a fair princess in the land was now, in its hour of direst need and unutterable distress and woe, given over to the flames, and thousands of innocent men, women, and children, in the midst of a horrible din of heartrending shrieks and cries, were tortured and put to death in so cruel and shameful a manner that no words would suffice to describe, nor no tears to bewail it . . . .

https://history.hanover.edu/texts/magde.html
