There was also the aim of expanding the Christian religion to non-Christian peoples. Both Spain and Portugal were in a good position to start such an adventure. Indeed, the Portuguese flourished as explorers throughout the century, and their great success clearly influenced the Spanish decision to support Colombus. Colombus’ argument for exploration to the Catholic Monarchs was that he would reach India by sailing westwards and get there before the Portuguese, who had just rounded the Cape of Good Hope. Moreover, for the Catholic Kings and particularly for Isabella, support for Colombus’ plan was also connected to the end of the Granada campaign of 1492. She could now contemplate the expansion of Spain beyond its new borders. It also entailed the expansion of Christianity beyond Europe, a continuation of the crusading spirit of the <em>Reconquista</em>. In this case, the converted would be innocent natives who would be given a chance of salvation. In 1529 he returned to his homeland bearing many gifts for King Charles. He hoped to be able to justify his actions. He had acted on his own initiative, not by royal command. The king did not trust him, and in 1527 established an <em>Audiencia</em> (law court) in New Spain to keep an eye on him. Charles' government in Castile was eager to show that the conquistadores would not be allowed to run Spain's new empire. Atahualpa was executed and so were most of his men. In 1533, Pizarro stormed and sacked Cuzco and founded a more suitable capital near the coast at Lima. The Incas could not recover from this blow and surrendered to the Spaniards.</span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">Ironically, the Spaniards were not only preoccupied by major Indian risings such as the one in 1537, but they worried that they might lose territory through war among themselves. Due to internal rivalries, Pizarro had his old friend Almagro strangled in 1538, and was eventually murdered by Almagro's son in 1541. What was the economic impact of the conquest on the indigenous population of Mexico and Peru?<em> Encomienda</em> and <em>mita</em> systems?</strong></span></h4><p style="margin-left:18.0pt;"><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">When a city was established, the indigenous population from that region were distributed to Spaniards as a prize for their participation in the conquest of that territory. This “distribution” was known as <strong>“encomienda</strong>”. According to Spanish law, the whites who benefitted by this tributary labour system were to receive it from the indigenous population either in cash, work or kind. On the other hand, the whites (“encomenderos”) were expected to protect their group, provide them with food and a salary and to teach them the Catholic faith.</span></p><p style="margin-left:18.0pt;"><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">In general, “encomenderos” abused the task they had been given by the Spanish government so they could maximise their profits. </span> </p><p style="margin-left:18.0pt;"><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">In 1542, King Charles passed the famous <strong>New Laws, </strong>abolishing the encomienda system and Indian slavery. It responded to a long and serious debate at the highest levels about the morality of what was being done to indigenous populations. Unfortunately, the proclamation proved to be a ‘dead letter’ in many places in America.</span></p><p style="margin-left:18.0pt;"><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">The <strong>mita system</strong> was a system established by the Inca Empire in order to construct buildings or create roads throughout the empire. It was later transformed into a coercive labour system when the Spanish conquered the Inca Empire, and it was in effect from 1573 to 1812. The Spanish used this system to get free labour from the indigenous people as a form of tribute. The indigenous people would provide agricultural labour or work in textile mills, but the most common form of labour was working the mines. They would have to work in the mines every seven years, but as time went on it became more frequent due deaths and injuries in the dangerous conditions of the mines. This also contributed to the declining population of indigenous people. As a result, many natives moved away in order to avoid the mita system. As the Spanish were driven towards making profit, they did not put native welfare at the heart of the system.</span></p><p style="margin-left:18.0pt;"><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">The mita draft required about 200 indigenous communities to send one-seventh of their male population to the mines. The workers were sent to the mines mainly in Huancavelica or Potosi. This system was set up because it was believed that it “would end slavery, keep everyone fed, get silver mined, and discourage abuse” but it produced the opposite.</span></p><p style="margin-left:18.0pt;"><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">A few indigenous communities were able to avoid the labour draft because they were able to pay off their mita obligation with silver. It resulted in the deaths of millions Native Americans, to an extent to which some historians believe it was a genocide. Many were killed by the <em>conquistadors. </em>Most were probably killed by European diseases, against which they had no resistance. The Mexican Indians were reduced from 25 million in 1520 to perhaps 3 million at the end of Charles´ reign. In Peru the figures are something like 9 million in 1530, reduced to 600,000 by 1620.</span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">The economy of the empire was based on slave labour, first of the Native Indians, then of slaves imported from Africa.</span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">The landscape and ecosystem were changed dramatically as Spaniards introduced new animals (cattle, sheep, horses) and new crops (wheat, vine and olives).</span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">The empire underlined the limited power of the Spanish government. Most of the great conquests were the result of the actions of conquistadors acting independently of the Spanish government.
