However, with millions of men being drafted or joining the military, women were desperately needed to keep the factories producing goods for the war running. Some of the traditional inequalities in terms of pay were redressed as women took on more skilled work and more responsibility.</span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">Between 1941 and 1944, the number of women working outside the home rose to over 6 million. The Ford Motor Company lifted a ban on which limited women to secretarial positions, and women would soon make up nearly half of the workforce at Ford’s Willow Run bomber plant in Michigan. The women were key to the increase in production of planes from 47,000 in 1942 to 85,000 in 1944, the production of 86,333 tanks and 12.5 million by the end of the war. Their work meant that the US could produce more than twice the war supplies of Germany, Italy and Japan combined.</span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">It was not just in war production that women took on roles that had been traditional male. Women became crane operators, tool makers, and lumberjacks with only a few weeks training. They also took on jobs in agriculture and kept the infrastructure running, for example in New Orleans women even became streetcar conductors for the first time. Before the war married women had given up paid work. I . . . have sat at a bench welding flat and vertical plates. . . I did overhead welding, horizontal, flat, vertical. . . I made some good welds. . . I had a good taste of summer today, and I am convinced that it is going to take backbone for welders to stick to their jobs through the summer months. It is harder on them than on any other of the workers­ their leathers are so hot and heavy, they get more of the fumes, and their hoods become instruments of torture. There were times today when I’d have to stop in the middle of a tack and push my hood back just to get a breath of fresh air. It grows unbearably hot under the hood, my glasses fog and blur my vision, and the only thing to do is to stop… Yet, the job confirmed my strong conviction. . . [that] what exhausts the woman welder is not the work, nor the heat, nor the demands upon physical strength. It is the apprehension that arises from inadequate skill and consequent lack of confidence, and this can be overcome by the right kind of training. I’ve mastered tacking now, so that doesn't bother me. I know that I can do it if my machine is correctly set, and I have learned enough of the [ways] of machines to be able to set them. And so, in spite of the discomforts of climbing, heavy equipment, and heat, I enjoyed the work today because I could do it.’­­­­­</span></p></div></div></div><h4><span style="color:#000080;"><strong>2. How did the Second World War change women’s military roles? </strong></span></h4><p><img alt="" height="391" src="../../../ib/history/group_of_women_airforce_service_pilots_and_b-17_flying_fortress.jpg" width="499"></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">Women did not only play a key role in maintaining the wartime economy. On May 14</span><sup>th</sup><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;"> 1942 the US Congress established The Women’s Auxiliary Army Corp, then on July 30</span><sup>th</sup><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;"> the US Congress authorized Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Services (WAVES). </span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">On September 16</span><sup>th</sup><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">, the Women’s Airforce Service Pilots (WASPS) was established. The US armed forces was supplied with more than 1000 auxiliary pilots through this organization. By 1945, approximately 350,000 women had served in uniform volunteering for the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps [WAACs] the Marine Corps Women’s Reserve the Coast Guard Women’s Reserve (SPARS), the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPS), the Army Nurses Corps, and the Navy Nurse Corps. The women in the armed forces not only took on back room office roles to free up men to fight in the front lines, they also drove trucks, flew test planes, trained aircraft gunners and repaired weapons and aircraft. </span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">Women also worked as radio operators, in photograph analysis, and in laboratories. Women in uniform took office and clerical jobs in the armed forces in order to free men to fight. Women in the Army Nurse Corps served close to enemy lines and 16 were killed in duty. 68 US service women were taken as POWs in the Philippines. Women in military roles were decorated during and after the war, not only 1,600 but also 565 WAACs in the Pacific Theatre won combat decorations. To what extent did women’s role in US society change during the Second World War? </strong></span></span></h4><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">There were other ways in which the war affected women in society. After the war broke out there was an increase in teenage marriages as ‘sweethearts’ married before the men went overseas. In addition, the birthrate actually rose during the war. Married women with children also had to take on running the household independently, managing finances, fixing boilers and cars, looking after the children as well as participate in the government wartime policies.</span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">However, although women had taken on a diverse range of new, traditionally male, roles in society there was not a correspondingly widespread shift in attitude towards the roles women should play. As you have seen the main recruitment target for war industries and the armed forces were young women and those with older children. The government provided little organized childcare. It was hammered at us through newspapers and magazines and radio. A young woman had a chance to meet hundreds of men in the course of one or two weeks, more than she would in her entire lifetime…I had friends whose mothers went out to work in factories. For the first time in their lives, they worked outside the home. They realized that they were capable of doing something more than cook a meal… because they had a taste of freedom, they had a taste of making their own money, a taste of spending their own money, making their own decisions. This was primarily to make way for the men returning home from the war, but also to accommodate the downturn in demand for war materials. Not only did working women lose out, but also Women veterans who tried to take advantage of veteran benefit programs such as the GI Bill were resisted. He wanted to challenge segregation in both the military and the defense industries. Randolph began to organize a march of African American workers to the White House to take place in July 1941. When the numbers of supporters grew to 100,000 the US government became concerned. Randolph was invited to meet President Roosevelt. Those that resisted or questioned Native Americans that volunteered to fight argued that as the Federal government did not guarantee their rights as citizens to vote in certain states – they should not join up. In 1942 the US government recruited hundreds of Native Americans who could speak both English and Navajo and their work became the only oral military code never to be broken by the enemy. What was the nature of the draft during the Second World War and what was the impact of conscription? </strong></span></h4><p><img alt="" height="252" src="../../../ib/history/main-qimg-904720fea2b5a4c3d006bcd48cd37214-c.jpg" width="299"></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">When Nazi Germany occupied France in the summer of 1940 public opinion in the US shifted to perceive Germany as a threat to homeland security. It also led to an increase in support for the adoption of military training for young American men. In September 1940 Congress approved the Selective Training and Service Act. This was the first peacetime draft in US history. The act required all males between the ages of 21 and 35 to register for the draft. Selection for one-year service would be by national lottery. The act also set up the Selective Service System to identify and induct men into military service. The act was the result of three months of intense debate, and key to its success was Brigadier General Lewis. B. Hershey who became head of the Selective Service system. The Second World War draft lasted from 1940 until 1947. In August 1941 the length of service was extended to two years. Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and Roosevelt’s declaration of war the act was amended again – service was extended to the duration of the war plus 6 months. The amendment also required all men aged 18 to 64 to register. Congress also gave the President authority to create one national army that could be deployed anywhere regardless of whether the men were draftees, regulars, National Guardsmen or Reservists. </span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">Ultimately, 49 million men registered. In 1942 local boards were established to oversee the selection process by lottery. Initially drafts were indeed by lottery but subsequently the older men in the eligible pool were drafted first. In November 1942 the upper age limit was reduced to 37. Volunteers were accepted until December 1942, when Executive Order 9279 prevented men aged 18 to 37 from volunteering in order to safeguard the wartime economy. By the end of the war in 1945, 10 million men had been inducted into the US armed forces. </span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">The local boards had discretion with regards to deferment of drafts and the president could offer exemptions for public health reasons. The government and the local boards attempted to protect ‘’vital industry, agriculture and ‘preserve the family’. This set up an unofficial system of deferments.
