                <p style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" class="noborder" src="../../../ib/englishb/images/make---do.jpg" style="width: 500px; height: 190px;"></p><p>Here&#39;s a page about the famous distinction which confuses so many students - between<strong> make</strong> and <strong>do.</strong> These two words are particularly vulnerable, it would appear, to L1 interference, since similar pairs of words occur in other languages, but with different distinctions and usages.</p><p>The two words express action but their appropriate use depends on the kind of action and the kind of context. In English, the generally accepted overall distinction is that <strong>&#39;making&#39;</strong> indicates <em>&#39;constructing something&#39;</em>, whereas<strong> &#39;doing&#39;</strong> involves <em>&#39;performing an activity&#39;</em>. Or to put it another way, <strong>&#39;making&#39;</strong> focuses on the<em> &#39;result that is produced&#39;</em>, whereas <strong>&#39;doing</strong>&#39; focuses more on <em>&#39;how a result is produced&#39;</em>.</p><p>For example...</p><p style="margin-left: 40px;"><strong><span style="color:#0000CD;">If you make an effort...</span></strong></p><p style="margin-left: 120px;"><span style="color:#800080;"><em><strong><span style="font-family:comic sans ms,cursive;">in other words, &#39;if you produce more energy and commitment&#39;</span></strong></em></span></p><p style="margin-left: 40px;"><strong><span style="color:#0000CD;">... you will do better in the exams.</span></strong></p><p style="margin-left: 120px;"><span style="color:#800080;"><em><strong><span style="font-family:comic sans ms,cursive;">in other words, &#39;you will perform in better ways&#39;</span></strong></em></span></p><p>Now, that basic ground rule is true enough, but &#39;make&#39; and &#39;do&#39; are used very commonly, and in colloquial ways, so the ground rule may often be difficult to apply, or not be immediately apparent. Which of the two words would you put in each of the gaps in the sentence below?
