<div class="dottedBox"><p><span style="color:#FF0000;">Another 'new' text type - or rather, a <u>collection</u> of related text types linked by being produced online, through online systems. Accordingly, it is not clear precisely which types of text, in which context(s) and for which purpose(s) might be included in this category.</span></p><p><span style="color:#FF0000;"> Ii would seem that the IB wishes the list of text types to cover quite a comprehensive range of the sort of text types that students might encounter, and so 'online writing' is included as an obviously common type of writing ... but since 'online writing' covers a vast range of different formats and approaches, with very few recognised conventions, the general category is not particularly illuminating at present.</span></p><p><span style="color:#FF0000;">Since this is a new class of text types, detailed Format and Approach are not yet fully clear. However, this text type did appear in the N20 SL paper - see the note added in red under <strong>'context, audience, purpose'</strong>, below.</span></p></div><hr class="hidden"><div class="greenBg"><h3>KEY FEATURES</h3><p><span style="color:#006400;"><u><strong>context, audience, purpose</strong></u> - </span></p><p style="margin-left: 40px;">* the question will set up a context by explaining what sort of social media or what sort of online forum is involved - this will probably mean defining some sort of 'special interests' forum, concerned with a particular subject area</p><p style="margin-left: 40px;">* the audience is likely to be specified by the kind of media/forum. If this is a special interest forum, it may be assumed that the audience is informed and familiar with subject-specific terminology .... otherwise, one assumes that the audience will be the Average Internaut - competent in language and understanding, but not necessarily very sophisticated</p><p style="margin-left: 40px;">* it would seem that the purpose of these two text types will be very similar: to make a public, online statement about one's personal stance / attitude / knowledge AND/OR to respond to / comment on other people's postings</p><p style="margin-left: 40px;"><span style="color:#FF0000;">** <u><strong>Choosing this text type as 'appropriate'?</strong></u> - in exam questions, it is most likely that the <em>"public, online statement "</em> mentioned as one purpose, above, will be the most likely clue: the logic being that an online posting will reach a wide, if unspecified, audience. (This was the logic used in the N20 SL paper.) To set up the other purpose - <em>"to respond to / comment on other people's postings"</em> - would require supplying those postings, which would not be possible within the limitations of an exam question</span></p><p><span style="color:#006400;"><u><strong>register and tone</strong></u> - </span></p><p style="margin-left: 40px;">* will adopt an informal to semi-formal register</p><p style="margin-left: 40px;">* will adopt a tone which is lively and personal, direct and clear</p><p><span style="color:#006400;"><u><strong>conventions</strong></u> - </span></p><p style="margin-left: 40px;">* will include first person statement and/or narration</p><p style="margin-left: 40px;">* will seek to engage the reader, eg through direct address, a lively and interesting style etc</p><p style="margin-left: 40px;">* will use 'typical forum techniques' e.g. references to other postings; comments about other members of the forum; etc</p><p style="margin-left: 80px;"><span style="color:#4B0082;"><em><strong>NOTE:</strong> do not worry that most forum postings are short: for the purpose of exam tasks, write as many words as is required by the exam rules, whether this is realistic or not. <strong>IN ADDITION: </strong>tasks will most probably <u>not</u> require writing a 'dialogue' between several different posts - but this has not been ruled out by IB.</em></span></p><div class="yellowBg"><h4><span style="color:#FF0000;">Appropriate?</span></h4><p><span style="color:#FF0000;">A <span style="color:#FF0000;"><strong><em>'social media posting / online forum</em>'</strong></span><strong> </strong> will be appropriate if the task requires you to join in and contribute to an online discussion of some sort. This will mean that you make a public statement of what you think to a fairly undefined audience (or at least, people that you don't know personally) - and the task is likely to specify that you are responding to earlier statements in the forum, either for or against. </span></p><p><span style="color:#FF0000;"><em>Not to be confused with...</em></span></p><p><span style="color:#FF0000;">... <strong><em>'</em></strong><em><strong>blog'</strong></em> or <em>'<span style="color:#FF0000;"><strong>(informal) email / letter</strong></span> '.</em>.. </span><span style="color:#FF0000;">a <em>'blog'</em> is an online statement, but it is essentially your own personal magazine - you decide to select and present some of your personal ideas in a lively entertaining way to a general, undefined audience. You want to entertain, and hook your (unknown) audience by your interesting, even provocative, opinions and experiences. An<em> '</em><span style="color:#FF0000;"><em><span style="color:#FF0000;">(informal) email / letter</span>'</em> is not a public form of statement: it is intended to <span style="color:#FF0000;">communicate some personal experiences, thoughts and feelings to somebody you know.
