I've made some minor alterations, but essentially this is based on the information that Chris and Emma have put together from official IB documents and posted in their blog on the Physics InThinking site so many thanks to them.</p><hr class="hidden"><p style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" class="noborder" src="../../../ib/chemistry/images/blog/1-to-7-1.png" style="width: 150px; height: 341px;"></p><hr class="hidden"><div class="panel panel-has-border panel-has-footer" style="box-shadow: rgba(0, 0, 19, 0.3) 0px 10px 30px -15px; border-color: rgb(39, 45, 105);"><div class="panel-heading" style="background-color: rgb(39, 45, 105);"><a class="expander pull-right" href="#"><span class="fa fa-plus"></span></a><div><p>Internal Assessment</p></div></div><div class="panel-body" style="background-color: inherit;"><div><p>The Internal Assessment will determine 20% of the grade for all schools, unchanged from non-pandemic years.</p><p>Schools should mark and internally moderate as usual. But instead of being sampled and externally moderated, <strong>all</strong> investigations must be uploaded to IBIS eCoursework by 20th April with an additional sheet per candidate containing your criteria marks (out of 2, 6, 6, 6 and 4) and an overall comment. Each IA will then be examined as though from scratch (but we imagine the examiner might glance through the criteria marks and comments already suggested).</p><p>If you've already annotated your students' work, there's no need to try to remove the annotations - just ensure that the examiner will be able to see what the student has written.</p></div></div><div class="panel-footer" style="background-color: rgba(39, 45, 105, 0.1);"><div><p><a href="../../../uploads/files/5f9ab6088f591/IB%20DP%20May%202021%20adapted%20assessment%20weightings.pdf">IBO (2020) <em>M21 adapted assessment: Modified marks, weightings and examination times</em></a></p></div></div></div><div class="panel panel-has-border panel-has-footer" style="box-shadow: rgba(0, 38, 20, 0.3) 0px 10px 30px -15px; border-color: rgb(30, 124, 106);"><div class="panel-heading" style="background-color: rgb(30, 124, 106);"><a class="expander pull-right" href="#"><span class="fa fa-plus"></span></a><div><p>Exams</p></div></div><div class="panel-body" style="background-color: inherit;"><div><p>Most IB World Schools will host exams in May 2021. This is not a choice for the individual school to make - it is determined by the IB - but the exam decision could be withdrawn at short notice if local restrictions or virus transmission rates would make it impossible. Individual candidates cannot opt-out either; indeed, the IB provides guidance on how a student could be remotely invigilated at home or in hospital if necessary!</p><p>For exam-route schools, the exams (on 3rd May) will combine to form the remaining 80% of the grade:</p><ul><li>Paper 1 <strong>30%</strong></li><li>Paper 2 <strong>50%</strong></li><li>Paper 3 removed</li></ul></div></div><div class="panel-footer" style="background-color: rgba(30, 124, 106, 0.1);"><div><p><a href="https://www.ibo.org/news/news-about-the-ib/covid-19-coronavirus-updates/">IBO (2021) <em>FAQs for the May 2021 Diploma Programme and Career-related Programme examination sessions </em></a></p><p><em>(No longer updated online after 6 JIB Docs (2) Teamary 2021 - updates will be sent directly to IB coordinators)</em></p></div></div></div><div class="panel panel-has-border panel-has-footer" style="box-shadow: rgba(131, 67, 0, 0.3) 0px 10px 30px -15px; border-color: rgb(217, 153, 0);"><div class="panel-heading" style="background-color: rgb(217, 153, 0);"><a class="expander pull-right" href="#"><span class="fa fa-plus"></span></a><div><p>Predicted grades</p></div></div><div class="panel-body" style="background-color: inherit;"><div><p>As in other years, schools will submit predicted grades for all students in all subjects by 20th April. These predicted grades should reflect what grade the student is (or would have been) most likely to achieve when the exams and IA are taken into account. The IB published <a href="../../page/16288/grade-descriptors.html" title="Exams » Essential Facts » Grade descriptors">Grade descriptors</a> in 2017 that might support schools in making predictions with reduced in-house exams or test evidence.</p><p>But this year, predicted grades are more important than usual. For non-exam schools, the predicted grade will contribute the 80% weighting not provided by exams. And any given exam school could become a non-exam school before 3rd May! So the IB has produced a <strong>distribution </strong>within which the predicted grades must fit.</p><p>The distribution is based on actual results achieved (not accuracy of predictions) in 2017, 2018 and 2019. The IB suggest that the distribution is generous at the top end, always rounding up the number of students who are allocated a 7 and 5 (although not 6 and 4). However, many schools have reported that the number of low grades required as part of the distribution seems disproportionately high; it seems a lone 2 or 3 (for example) in the years 2017-2019 could have a big impact in 2021.</p><p>Teachers with <strong>five or fewer students </strong>in SL Chemistry and/or HL Chemistry will notice that IBIS presents the distribution as a full suite of 7s. But in reality this just means you don't have an allotted distribution; you can enter what grades you feel are justified at or below 7. The same is true for A grades in the Extended Essay.</p><p>If you have concerns about your distribution, talk to your Diploma Coordinator. They will have an understanding of the bigger picture for your school and might be willing to submit an application for an amended distribution through the Exceptions process. There are two Exceptions justifications:</p><ol><li>Exceptional candidates (where one or two grades might be changed upwards)</li><li>Exceptional historical data (where one year out of 2017-19 is deemed to be atypical and replaced by the grades awarded in a previous year)</li></ol><p>Some anecdotal evidence suggests that the Exceptions applications already submitted have been most successful when they are concise and when an amended distribution is proposed. However, the Extended Essay (like Theory of Knowledge) is examined as usual without any consideration of your predictions.</p><p>It is therefore less important to employ the Exceptions process for the Extended Essay - especially if your Coordinator is short on time and resources before 20th April!</p></div></div><div class="panel-footer" style="background-color: rgba(103, 7, 124, 0.1);"><div><p>text</p></div></div></div><div class="panel panel-has-border" style="box-shadow: rgba(107, 0, 0, 0.3) 0px 10px 30px -15px; border-color: rgb(193, 0, 75);"><div class="panel-heading" style="background-color: rgb(193, 0, 75);"><a class="expander pull-right" href="#"><span class="fa fa-plus"></span></a><div><p>Which route is better?</p></div></div><div class="panel-body" style="background-color: inherit;"><div><p>There are some benefits for students taking exams:</p><ul><li>Teaching, learning and exam preparation can continue until the exam (rather than 20th April or, at some schools, before Easter vacations commence)</li><li>A greater sense of individual justice - their personal exam performance (and coursework) will determine their personal grade</li><li>The predicted grades don't count. It therefore wouldn't be harmful to the students if a 'weaker' cohort had preceded them in 2017-19 and any Exceptions process had been unsuccessful.</li></ul><p>We also understand that some exam-route schools feel it is not fair for their students to take exams. The IB has said that they will be more generous in their marking and grading to ensure that whole cohorts do not fall through the cracks - although we've yet to hear from an examiner who can verify this!</p><p>The non-exam route is unpredictable. Some cohorts who have been out of school for most of the last 12 months might be relieved to avoid the pressure of a final exam series, but individual students may be concerned about their predicted grades reflecting their full potential. The predicted grade weighting is generous - students will receive the top end of the exam boundary:</p><ul><li>This makes it mathematically difficult for a student's grade to be anything below their prediction</li><li>But if the grades for the whole cohort end up being too high, it could be the students with the weakest coursework who are brought down (rather than those who would have ranked lower in an exam)</li></ul><p>While we know that grades improved globally at the top end in May 2020, every school in the world can point to a small handful of students with results that are lower than they deserved. Without exams taking place, who can guess which students might have messed up on the day?</p></div></div><div class="panel-footer" style="background-color: rgba(193, 0, 75, 0.1);"><div><p>text</p></div></div></div><div class="panel panel-has-border" style="box-shadow: rgba(38, 0, 0, 0.3) 0px 10px 30px -15px; border-color: rgb(124, 7, 21);"><div class="panel-heading" style="background-color: rgb(124, 7, 21);"><a class="expander pull-right" href="#"><span class="fa fa-plus"></span></a><div><p>Should I share my predicted grades with my class?</p></div></div><div class="panel-body" style="background-color: inherit;"><div><p>Whether you share your predicted grades with students is up to your school Diploma Coordinator and Administrator. The predictions might help to guide students in making higher education applications or decisions, and give them a sense of trust in your belief in them. On the other hand, there are several reasons why the predicted grades you submit might not land on the certificates in the summer, even for non-exam schools:</p><ul><li>You might suggest grades that are higher than the permitted distribution. Your Coordinator may not apply through the Exceptions process (e.g. because other subjects are in a worse situation), or an application that they do make may be unsuccessful. Your grades will therefore need to be lowered before 20th April.</li><li>The IB will <strong>review</strong> all schools' results to ensure that they are realistic for the school and in line with previous years. If average results are too high, we may therefore expect that some students' grades will come down (and this could be done using coursework, rather than anticipated exam performance).</li><li>The overall grade inflation (if any) across exam schools will be used as a peg to hold down any possible inflation across non-exam schools.</li></ul></div></div><div class="panel-footer" style="background-color: rgba(124, 7, 21, 0.1);"><div><p>text</p></div></div></div></div>
