EXTENDED ESSAYS

Introduction

The 50 extended essays selected for this publication have been chosen from 17 of the subjects most commonly selected for the extended essay, representing a range of disciplines. Each essay is an example of excellent work in the subject. A range of essays from both examination sessions and all IB regions have been selected.

Submitted to meet the requirements of the extended essay course outlined in the Extended essay guide published in April 1998 (for first examinations in 1999), these essays also fulfill the requirements for a high A grade for the new syllabus (Extended essay guide published March 2007 for first examinations in 2009).

These essays show originality and flair and a level of personal engagement that make them outstanding pieces of research work in their chosen discipline. All essays have been reproduced in their entirety; examiner comments and necessary school or candidate identifiers have been removed but no errors have been corrected. Teachers are encouraged to use this publication to inspire their students as they research and write their own essays. The range of examples of excellent work demonstrated here should help students to develop their own individual research topics and approaches.

The IB wishes to thank all the students and supervisors for their outstanding contributions to this publication. In some instances we could not reach the student to get permission to publish their name; in these cases the essays appear anonymously.

The Extended essay guide can be purchased from the IB store at http://store.ibo.org.
