A Nazi Germany would include only “pure” Germans of the superior Aryan race. Nazi ideology was based on Social Darwiniam views about the natural laws of 'selection' to breed the 'fittest. France a natural enemy, historically but also due to its role in the Treaty of Versailles. Britain as Hitler admired its empire and its people were deemed racially similar. Only a sufficiently large space on this earth can ensure the independent existence of a nation ... As members of the highest species of humanity on this earth, we have a[n] obligation ... [to] ... fulfil ... The acquisition f land and soil [must be] the objective of our foreign policy ... The demand for the restoration of the frontiers of 1914 is a political absurdity ... We ... are turning our eyes towards the land in the East ... The colossal empire in the East is ripe for dissolution. Hitler criticised Gustav's Stresemann's foreign policy as it had 'accepted' the Treaty of Versailles and had also accepted the Locarno Treaties which benefited France. Hitler declared that Germany should not have joined the League of Nations as it oversaw the implementation of the Versailles, and he denounced both the Dawes and the Young plan as the agreements accepted reparations payments.</span></p><ul><li><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">In 1930 the Nazis increased their share of seats in the Reichstag from 12 to 107, winning almost 6 million votes.</span></li><li><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">Hitler stood in the 1932 presidential elections and won 13 million votes (36%) in the final round.</span></li><li><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">The increasing popularity of Hitler led army leaders and right-wing nationalist politicians to consider brining the Nazis into a coalition government.</span></li><li><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">Hitler refused to join unless he was made Chancellor, which was ultimately accepted by Hitler army leader Kurt von Schleicher and aristocrat Franz von Papen. He claimed that these <span data-scayt-word="organizations" data-wsc-id="l5hwsii9c58mi9a4o" data-wsc-lang="en_GB">organizations</span> were part of a 'French conspiracy' to keep Germany weak and incapable of self-defence. Hitler’s withdrawal from the League meant he could he could now focus on attacking and revising the Treaty of Versailles.</span></p></div></div></div></div><div title="Page 4"><div><div><div><div title="Page 5"><div><div><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;"><strong>Non-aggression Pact with Poland January 1934</strong></span></p></div></div></div></div></div></div></div><div title="Page 5"><div><div><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">After Germany withdrew from the League, Poland, on Germany’s eastern border, was vulnerable. Hitler entered into this 10-year Non-Aggression Pact with Poland in January, 1934 to secure his eastern flank so that he could focus on rearmament and his plan to remilitarise the Rhineland. The agreement also broke the Franco-Polish agreement of 1921 and ended the possibility of an agreement between Czechoslovakia and Poland. Hitler had no intention of keeping the agreement, and stated “All our agreements with Poland have a temporary significance”.</span></p></div></div></div><div title="Page 5"><div><div><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;"><strong>Rome-Berlin Axis October 1936</strong></span></p></div></div></div><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">Following the invasion of Abyssinia and intervention in the Spanish Civil War (see next page), Italy realigned diplomatically towards Nazi Germany. Through a series of agreements outlined below, which would also include Japan, the Axis grew in order to secure its member states expansionist interests. </span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">This was an agreement drafted by Italian foreign minister <span data-scayt-word="Galeazzo" data-wsc-id="l5hwkrabitc1t5266" data-wsc-lang="en_GB">Galeazzo</span> <span data-scayt-word="Ciano" data-wsc-id="l5hwkraayupuj4nds" data-wsc-lang="en_GB">Ciano</span> which linked the two fascist states. Mussolini declared that after this agreement all European affairs would rotate on the 'Rome-Berlin axis'. </span></p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;"><strong><span data-scayt-word="Anti-Comintern" data-wsc-id="l5hzr03oeivxfqtyv" data-wsc-lang="en_GB">Anti-Comintern</span> Pact November 1937</strong></span><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">The initial <span data-scayt-word="Anti-Comintern" data-wsc-id="l5hwkrhrn6jyr2fsq" data-wsc-lang="en_GB">Anti-Comintern</span> Pact was an agreement between Nazi Germany and Japan against the the Communist International in November 1936. It was primarily targetting the USSR. Italy then joined the pact in November 1937.</span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">Significantly after this realignment of Italy away from Britain and France towards Nazi Germany, where Italy had stood in his way in 1934, in March 1938 Hitler was able to achieve <span data-scayt-word="Anschluss" data-wsc-id="l5hx9ofxxe7c5sxjo" data-wsc-lang="en_GB">Anschluss</span>.</span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">Mussolini also acted as Hitler's mediator during the Munich Crisis, outlining German demands to the western powers.</span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;"><strong>British guarantee of Poland March 1939</strong></span></p><div title="Page 12"><div><div><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">After Hitler broke the Munich Agreement and invaded the rest of Czechoslovakia in March 1939, a guarantee was offered to Poland to give help in the event of a German attack. This failed to contain Hitler who responded by declaring the ing the Anglo– German Naval Agreement invalid and ending the 1934 Non-Aggression Pact with Poland</span></p></div></div></div><div title="Page 12"><div><div><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;"><strong>Nazi-Soviet Pact August 1939</strong></span></p><div title="Page 14"><div><div><div><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">This extraordinary agreement and shift in diplomatic alignment in Europe pledged to Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union to remain neutral in the event of either nation being attacked by a third part. The pact also included a secret protocol dividing Northern and Eastern Europe into German and Soviet spheres of influence: the Baltic states and <span data-scayt-word="Bessarabia" data-wsc-id="l5hxeaaikbtd7ukwx" data-wsc-lang="en_GB">Bessarabia</span> in Romania were to be in the Soviet sphere, and Poland was to be divided between the two powers.</span></p></div></div></div></div><div title="Page 14"><div><div><div><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">The Soviet Union had initially favoured an alliance with Britain and France. However, the British did not want to agree a military alliance with communists and after the weakness of the western allies was revealed during the Spanish civil war and ultimately in the Munich Agreement - Stalin decided to move to sign the 'Devil's Alliance'.</span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">This alignment was highly significant as it secured Hitler's Germany from the threat of a two-front war in the event of a German attack on Poland.</span></p></div></div></div></div></div></div></div><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;"><strong>Pact of Steel May 1939</strong></span><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">The Pact of Steel formalised and turned the Rome-Berlin Axis into a military alliance. It was signed by Hitler and Mussolini on May 22, 1939. The pact linked the two states politically and militarily.</span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;"><strong>Tripartite Pact September 1940</strong></span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">This pact formally integrated the military aims of Italy, Nazi Germany and Japan. It was a defensive military agreement, signed in Berlin and is also known as the Berlin Pact. It was primarily aimed at the United States and intended to dissuade the Americans from involvement in Europe and Asia. Nevertheless, its articles did not oblige its signatories to commit to fight a common war.</span></p></div><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;"></span></p></div><script>document.querySelectorAll('.tib-teacher-only').forEach(e => e.remove());</script>
