<p style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" class="noborder" src="../../../ib/englishb/images/listening-icon.jpg" style="width: 450px; height: 170px;"></p><p>.</p><p>Here are some tips and techniques to make sure that students handle the Listening exam in as disciplined and methodical a way as possible.</p><hr class="hidden"><h3><span style="color:#FF0000;"><em><strong>1. Read the questions</strong></em> </span></h3><section class="tib-hiddenbox"><p>Remember that you have<em> 5 minutes</em> to read the question paper before the exam starts (i.e. the recording is started) - during this time, you cannot make any notes or write anything.</p><p>Then, you have <strong><em>4 minutes</em></strong> before each of the three texts to read the questions and prepare - during these 4 minute periods you <u><em>can</em></u> write and make notes... and you <u><em>should</em></u>.</p><p>The point of this is to work out, and note, what you should be looking for in each question. This will probably be a key word or phrase.</p><p>For example, if you have an MCQ question that says “The first priority of autonomous driving technology is…”, you should underline ‘first priority’, and so listen out for anything about priorities - or any similar wording which involves 'priorities', or 'the most important'.</p></section><hr class="hidden"><h3><span style="color:#FF0000;"><em><strong>2. Make notes or marks</strong></em> </span></h3><section class="tib-hiddenbox"><p>As you listen to the recording, you should be making little marks or notes alongside the questions to remember which you think are the right answers.</p><p>Remember that only what is written <strong>inside the answer boxes</strong> is marked – all other scrawls and scribbles on the paper are ignored by the examiners.</p><p>There is a space on each page of the question paper headed ‘Notes’. I’m not sure that this is actually very useful – under the time pressure of the unstoppable playing of the recording, it must be better to concentrate on the questions themselves, making those little marks and indications, rather than jumping back to the Notes box to waste time writing.</p></section><hr class="hidden"><h3><span style="color:#FF0000;"><em><strong>3. Questions follow the sequence of the text</strong></em> </span></h3><section class="tib-hiddenbox"><p>In almost all cases, they questions follow the sequence of the ideas in the text.</p><p>So you should proceed methodically through the questions – as soon as you have a probable answer for one question, you should move on to the next question, listening out for the answer to that one. But you should probably keep in mind what the next question is about - you shouldn't get stuck on listening out for the answer to the first question: you might have missed it!</p></section><hr class="hidden"><h3><span style="color:#FF0000;"><em><strong>4. Choose then check</strong></em> </span></h3><section class="tib-hiddenbox"><p>During the first play-through, you should note (<em>in some form or another: see 2. above</em>) the likely answer to each question.</p><p>Then, in the pause between play-throughs, you should re-read the questions, checking that your possible answers are indeed likely – and if not, you should know that you will have to listen especially carefully at that point in the recording.</p><p>During the second play-through, you should check your probable answers against what you hear – is that <u><em>really</em></u> what the recording says?</p></section><hr class="hidden"><h3><span style="color:#FF0000;"><em><strong>5. Write in the answer boxes</strong></em> </span></h3><section class="tib-hiddenbox"><p>The M22 Subject Report makes a point of this – only what is in the boxes will be marked (and of course, that means that any other notes or scribbles outside those boxes will not be looked at by the examiners, <em>see 2. and 4. above</em>).</p><p>So, once you have checked your chosen answers, you should write them clearly in the boxes. But only do this after the second play-through - you shouldn’t think of writing anything in the boxes until you have checked them by hearing the recording again.</p></section><hr class="hidden"><h3><em><span style="color:#FF0000;">6. Write <u>clearly</u></span></em></h3><section class="tib-hiddenbox"><p>You should at all points make sure that your handwriting is <em><strong>clear</strong></em>.</p><p>This particularly applies to writing in identifying letters, for example in MCQ questions.
