<p style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" class="noborder" src="../../../ib/englishb/images/identities-icon-1.jpg" style="width: 432px; height: 166px;"></p><p>The concept of 'identity' covers a massive area, from the identity of the individual to the identity of social groups. And anyway, there is the fundamental problem that it is (almost inherently?) subjective ... my notion of a given identity is probably not going to match your notion.</p><p>On the other hand, it's a fascinating area to explore - and it's also essential for sanity, since we all navigate through a map of identities.</p><h3>Identity & language</h3><p>From the point of view of language, 'identity' is expressed by personal pronouns, fundamentally, and so our sense of identity is made concrete by...</p><hr class="hidden"><h3 style="text-align: center;"><span style="color:#000080;">I ... you (<span style="font-family:comic sans ms,cursive;">single</span>) ... he / she / it ... we ... you (<span style="font-family:comic sans ms,cursive;">group</span>) ... they (<span style="font-family:comic sans ms,cursive;">distant group</span>)</span></h3><hr class="hidden"><p>And we might sub-divide those into...</p><hr class="hidden"><h3 style="text-align: center;"><span style="color:#000080;">I ... you (<span style="font-family:comic sans ms,cursive;">single</span>) ... we ... you (<span style="font-family:comic sans ms,cursive;">group</span>) <span style="font-family:comic sans ms,cursive;"></span></span></h3><h3 style="text-align: center;"><em><span style="color:#000080;"><span style="font-family:comic sans ms,cursive;">= recognised as subjects / addressed personally</span></span></em></h3><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="color:#000080;"></span><span style="color:#B22222;"><em><strong>versus</strong></em></span><span style="color:#000080;"></span></p><h3 style="text-align: center;"><span style="color:#000080;">he / she / it ... they (<span style="font-family:comic sans ms,cursive;">distant group</span>) </span></h3><h3 style="text-align: center;"><em><span style="color:#000080;"><span style="font-family:comic sans ms,cursive;">= recognised as objects / described impersonally</span></span></em></h3><hr class="hidden"><p>So, the fact that identity forms part of the most basic structure of language indicates its importance in our view of the world - and we may then ask about the extent that such language structures <em>form</em>, or even <em>restrict</em>, our view of identity.</p><p>Finally, there's the 'First Person Factor' - reflecting the unavoidable fact that identity begins at home: i.e. inside our own head. We make judgements about identity depending on our own identity, because each of us is the centre of the world (of course). This is also known as the <em>'ME ME ME'</em> bias, and it makes the grouping of pronouns look like this...</p><h3 style="text-align: center;"><span style="color:#0000FF;">I ... we = familiar identity</span></h3><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="color:#B22222;"><em><strong>versus</strong></em></span></p><h3 style="text-align: center;"><span style="color:#800080;">you (single) ... he / she / it ... you (group) ... they (distant group) </span></h3><h3 style="text-align: center;"><span style="color:#800080;">= unfamiliar identity</span></h3><p>Now, we're all familiar with the personal pronouns ... but perhaps less aware of the patterns that they form, as suggested above. Those patterns suggest different species of identity, and therefore different ways of thinking about identity. The core distinction is between the identities that we know (or think we know):<strong> 'I'</strong> and <strong>'we'</strong> - and the identities that we assume we know (but actually only guess):<strong> 'he / she / it', 'you' </strong>and<strong> 'they'</strong>. A huge amount of social conflict arises from, I suggest, the prejudices and stereotypes that follow from the identity distinctions between 'us' and 'them'.</p><hr class="hidden"><div class="blueBg"><div><h3><span style="color:#000080;">Master list</span></h3><p>Here are a wide range of links to pages which contain material relevant to <span style="color:#0000CD;"><em><strong>'Identities'</strong></em></span></p><ul><li>Some of these are filed directly under this page - see the list in the panel to the left.</li><li>Others are filed elsewhere in the site, because they address other aspects of language, communication and culture - you can find them easily by clicking on the name of the page.</li></ul></div></div><h4><em><strong>Concepts of identity</strong></em></h4><p><a href="../15592/cultural-diversity.html" title="Topics » Option topics » Cultural diversity">Cultural diversity</a> ... a theoretical overview of how different (cultural) identities interact - useful for exploring the whole field</p><p><a href="https://www.thinkib.net/englishb/page/26327/history-tradition-" title="Themes, 2018 onwards » Identities » History & tradition ">History & tradition</a> ... extract from a novel: a dialogue about how history and tradition are vital for defining a sense of who you are</p><p><a href="https://www.thinkib.net/englishb/page/26333/class-jokes-and-linkers-" title="Themes, 2018 onwards » Identities » Class, jokes, and linkers ">Class, jokes, and linkers </a> ... short text about how class structure underlies certain types of British humour - but what do we mean by 'class' ... how do we recognise class differences? ... and what effect does class have on Identity?</p><p><a href="https://www.thinkib.net/englishb/page/26334/respecting-cultural-diversity-" title="Themes, 2018 onwards » Identities » Respecting cultural diversity?
