                <p>Time and again, we see Paper 1 scripts in which candidates have lost marks for very simple, and very avoidable, errors. Here is a collection of the classics.</p><p>These errors are all concerned with &#39;write-in&#39; types of questions: short answers, True/False + justification, find-the-phrase, and so on. Such errors are highly visible - and also correctable - because they are related to assumptions that the students may bring to writing the answer, whatever the specific question may be. Typical errors related to other types of question - MCQ, select-from-a-list, etc - are less easy to generalise about, since they normally have to do with the particular difficulties of particular questions about particular texts.</p><p>In each case, the title describes the error ... there is an explanation of exactly why the mark has been lost ... you can see an image of the actual response in the script ... and the precise wording of the required answer in the Markscheme is provided.</p><p>.</p><h3>Writing too much #1</h3><p>In this example, the mark has been denied because, even though the target phrase is included, there are too many words included in the answer. The reasoning here is that:-</p><p>1. The question asks for a &lsquo;phrase&rsquo;, not 2 lines. Tell your students (a) that they should always do <u>exactly</u> what the question asks, and (b) a &#39;phrase&#39; can be taken to mean a group of words of between 2 and 5 words.</p><p>2. Writing too many words almost always means including details which are most probably both irrelevant and directly wrong - in this case, everything from &quot;ranging...&quot; onwards has nothing to do with the target idea of &quot;emphasizes this dislike&quot;.</p><p style="text-align: center;"><br><img alt="" src="../../../ib/englishb/images/P1err-A.jpg" style="width: 600px; height: 116px;"></p><p style="margin-left: 40px;"><u><strong>Markscheme</strong></u> : <strong>27. </strong>had long tired of reactions</p><h3>Writing too much #2</h3><p>In the previous example, the student was asked for a &#39;phrase&#39; and provided a sentence; here the student is asked for a &#39;word&#39; and provides a phrase. The mark has been lost because the examiner cannot determine which &#39;word&#39; is intended - &quot;extraordinary&quot; (wrong) or &quot;eloquent&quot; (right).</p><p style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" src="../../../ib/englishb/images/P1err-B.jpg" style="width: 600px; height: 89px;"></p><p style="margin-left: 40px;"><u><strong>Markscheme</strong></u> : <strong>9. </strong>eloquent</p><h3>Writing too much : the dangerous borderline</h3><p>The two responses below illustrate the very fine line between &#39;enough&#39; and &#39;too much&#39; when deciding what you need to include in the answer.</p><p>Q.10 ... The question asks for &#39;<strong>one </strong>thing&#39;, and the response provides two - so we&#39;re already in danger of writing more than is required. However, it is arguable that the two elements, &quot;technicalities of art&quot; and &quot;how to put a painting together&quot;, are actually the same &#39;one thing&#39; - and indeed the Markscheme allows both elements as correct. Accordingly, the mark is allowed (just) because while the response is excessive, none of the excess is irrelevant and all is clearly accurate as far as the question is concerned.</p><p>Q.11 ... This question is aimed at the following section of the source text:<em> &quot;... Hearing of Kieron&rsquo;s promise, one local artist, Carol Ann Pennington, offered him some tips. Since then he has had lessons with other Norfolk-based painters ...&quot;</em> The (fairly subtle) implication is that &quot;local&quot; for Kieron means &quot;Norfolk-based&quot;, therefore he lives in Norfolk. There is actually no mention of &#39;living in the city&#39; in the source text, and living &#39;with his parents&#39; is obvious since Kieron is seven years old - but not exactly the evident point of the question! Look at the handwritten response: the (wrong) &#39;city + parents&#39; answer was written first, since it fills the available space ... but then the student looked more closely and came up with the (right) &#39;Norfolk&#39; answer, scrawled in above the first answer.</p><p>The mark is denied because <em>two</em> answers are given, one of which is <em>wrong.</em> Recommend to your students that if they are dithering between two answers, they <strong>must</strong> make a choice - giving two answers is a good way of making certain that you lose the mark.</p><p style="text-align: center;"><br><img alt="" src="../../../ib/englishb/images/P1err-D.jpg" style="width: 600px; height: 135px;"></p><p style="margin-left: 40px;"><u><strong>Markscheme</strong></u> :</p><p style="margin-left: 80px;"><strong>10. </strong>the technicalities of art / how to put a painting together</p><p style="margin-left: 120px;"><em>Accept other words with the same meaning.</em></p><p style="margin-left: 80px;"><strong>11. </strong>Norfolk</p><h3>Writing too little, imprecisely</h3><p>This question type is quite common in Paper 1 - testing anaphoric referencing through pronouns and the like. A standard failure in this type of exercise is that students provide <u>incomplete</u> answers - they obviously know where to look, in general terms, but what they actually write is vague and insufficient, and so inaccurate.</p><p>Compare the handwritten answers with what is required by the Markscheme: the single words appear in the expected answers, but as they stand, as single words, they are hopelessly imprecise. For instance, to indicate that &quot;everyone&quot; refers to &#39;adults&#39; tells us nothing about the precise adults to which the passage is obviously referring.</p><p>In this particular case, I wonder if the errors were caused by one or both of two factors:-</p><p style="margin-left: 40px;">(a) the example may seem to imply that a correct answer should involve one word only (see Q.13)</p><p style="margin-left: 40px;">(b) the student may not understand, in Q.15, the concept of a gerund phrase (e.g. &quot;not painting anymore&quot;) - and that such a gerund is the equivalent of a single target reference like &#39;Garner&#39;.</p><p>Whatever the complicated causes of possible error, tell your students to think carefully about what the target reference involves, and then to explain precisely, most reliably by using a short phrase from the text.</p><p style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" src="../../../ib/englishb/images/P1err-C.jpg" style="width: 600px; height: 227px;"></p><p style="margin-left: 40px;"><u><strong>Markscheme</strong></u> :</p><p style="margin-left: 80px;"><strong>13. </strong>more than 1000 adults / Kieron&rsquo;s art classmates</p><p style="margin-left: 80px;"><strong>15. </strong>not painting anymore / doing something other than painting</p><h3>Writing too little, and making no sense</h3><p>In write-in answers, examiners can only mark on the basis of what is actually written on the answer-paper. At times, such written answers do not make sense - one might be able to guess what the student was trying to suggest, but the actual wording is not clearly related to either question or source text. Recommend to the students that they should re-read what they have written, in order to check, on the basis of common sense to start with, whether the wording makes sense.</p><p>The True/False + Justification question-type is mainly an exercise in logical inference. One has to judge a statement True or False based on accurate interpretation of the relevant phrasing in the text.
